Hi scighera what hotel did you stay at as it sounds really nice.
Last September I stayed in Sant'Anastasia, located in the Vesuvius National Park, at the feet of Monte Somma (the Vesuvius' most ancient crater). When I opened my hotel window, Vesuvius completely filled the view and I could almost touch this giant with my hand! Awesome experience. It brought back memories of our honeymoon, when we climbed Vesuvius for the first time.
Daisy, you can buy Lacryma Christi in the UK, do you know the history of its origin ??
Is there ever any eruptive activity on Vesuvius - especially recently when Etna & Stromboli were so spectacularly active?
Grown on the slopes of Vesuvius my favourite red wine - Lacryma Christi - I wish I could buy it here in the UK. The first thing I buy when I arrive in Sorrrento.
Why does the time lapse not work please
One of my most favorite volcanoes, ever! Is this view, close to the summit of the main caldera?
I like the Vesuvius. I have been climbed many times. At the top it is buffet with cold beer and gift shop. ;)25/04/18 17.01
What we call "Vesuvius" is really the younger part of the mountain complex that geologists call "Greater Vesuvius". The older part of the mountain, now an extinct volcano, is called Monte Somma.
Since AD 79, the volcano has erupted over forty times. There have been no eruptions since 1944, and none of the eruptions after AD 79 were as large or destructive as the Pompeian one. Scientists believe a future eruption can be forecast 14 to 20 days ahead of that event. With emergency evacuation set now at 7 days the long term plan is to reduce that time to 2 - 3 days. In 1944 the eruption destoyed thefunicular cable car : "Funiculì, Funiculà" a famous Neapolitan song composed in 1880 by Luigi Denza to lyrics by Peppino Turco. It was written to commemorate the opening of the first funicular cable car on Mount Vesuvius. EnJoy EnJoy
1apr18--The volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79, buried both Pompeii, and the ancient coastal town of Herculaneum. Tonight on tv show 60 Minutes will be a segment on papyrus scrolls of an ancient library seared shut by the volcanic heat. Scholars believe the damaged scrolls could contain lost works of Greek philosophy, Roman poetry. EnJoy EnJoy
