Cupola of St. Peter Basilica - Vatican City Live cam

View of St. Peter's cupola from Piazza Risorgimento in Rome

Our Vatican webcam from Rome's Piazza Risorgimento offers an incredible view of St. Peter's cupola, the world's tallest dome (136 m).

Standing magnificently, this masterpiece fully expresses mankind’s inventive spirit and symbolizes the Church of Rome. Every day countless visitors from all over the world make their way to this very spot. Designed by Michelangelo Buonarroti beginning in late 1546, the dome's construction was discontinued at his death in 1564. The completion was assigned to Michelangelo's pupil, Giacomo Della Porta.
After 22 months, in 1590, this glorious work of art was finally completed. At the cupola’s base, amongst the unbelievably detailed mosaics, a short Latin text reads: "Upon this rock, I will build my church".
What's the best way to experience the cupola? Take the 551-step stairway all the way to the top! Beware, it's no easy climb, but the breathtaking view of Rome from the dome is well worth it.
