Paros is located approximately in the middle of the Cyclades, between Naxos and Antiparos. In its coasts there exist significant ports, such as the port of Naoussa and Parikia. The most important buildings and monuments of the capital are the famous church of Panagia Ekantotapiliani (said to have 100 gates) which according to tradition was built by Saint Helen, and the Frankish castle.
Populated since the prehistoric years has been one of the major centers of the Cycladic civilization. Paros developed close relations with Crete. It experienced great economic and artistic prosperity in the 8th century. BC, which continued with short breaks until the Hellenistic period. Much of the acne was due to its famous marbles from which were built many famous sculptures of antiquity and temples. From this island came from some of the famous sculptors (Scopas, Thrasymedes, Agorakritos), painters and poets (Archilochus). Byzantine times were spent in obscurity because of pirate raids. During the War of 1821 on the island acted the heroine Manto Mavrogenous.

Nice one Tio, glad you've made it alive! 1970 is the year I was born, almost 50yrs ago... time flies, eh?
mmmmm Ouzo with charcoal grilled octopus !
I lived here for a couple of years way back in 1970/2 ...then there was just one hotel at Paroikia ,one metalled road to Naoussa and no airport nor heliport...It was during the time of the Generals and once ,I recall, a military 'plane flew over dropping propaganda leaflets, which, due to the prevailing wind, all fell into the sea ! And then the time when I got an abcess in my right armpit, and there being no doctor , had to be dug out without local anaesthetic (just some Metaxa brandy) by the village barber - The Good Old Days !!
