The Acropolis of Athens is one of the most popular destinations as well as one of the most important tourist hotspots in Europe. The citadel includes the ruins of several historic buildings, including the Parthenon, built in 447 BC as a temple to the goddess Athena. The Erechtheion stands on the northern side of the Acropolis, the temple was originally dedicated to Athena and Poseidon. The Temple of Athena Nike rises next to the Propylaea. On the southwest side of the Acropolis, tourists will find the majestic Odeo of Herod Atticus, the theater built by Herod Atticus to commemorate his wife, Aspasia Annia Regilla.
