Ducks' Lake 'Lagoa dos Patos' is separated from the Atlantic Ocean by a sandbar about 5 miles (8 kilometers) wide. The Jacuí-Guaíba and Camaquã Rivers empty into it, while the navigable São Gonçalo Channel, which enters Ducks' Lake near the town of Pelotas, connects Ducks' Lake to Lagoa Mirim to the south.Pelotas located 31°46′19″S is as far south of the equator as Benghazi 32°07′N is north of the equator. The Rio Grande, at the south end of Ducks' Lake, forms the outlet to the Atlantic. The Beach of Laranjal 'Praia do Laranjal' is seen here 10 miles east of Pelotas and north of The Rio Grande.

It is located in the most southern State of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil. It covers an area of 10,000 km2 (3,900 sq mi),[1] is 174 miles (280 km) long and has a maximum width of 44 miles (60 km).
