Merry Christmas to all!
The other tower seen ( beyond the Snack Bar ) is The Tower of the Pelosa ( Torre della Pelosa ). The tower of the Pelosa is part of the complex of fortified structures that, from the high Middle Ages up to the middle of the nineteenth century, constituted the defensive, sighting and communication system of the coastal strip of Sardinia. It is located on a small island located between Isola Piana and Capo Falcone right at the entrance of the Asinara strait, a strategic position for the control of the traffic of boats that from the "sea outside" headed towards the low and sandy coast of the gulf of Asinara , easily violated in case of assault on the riparian communities of the area. It is in visual contact with the towers of Isola Piana and Capo Falcone. The tower takes its name from the nearby beach originally called "Sa palosa", probably due to the presence of sea straw (algae) which is deposited in abundance. The tower has a truncated cone shape, a base diameter of 16 m, a height of 10 m and a perimeter wall thickness of about 2.5 m. Built well before 1578 the tower was abandoned in 1846 , four years after the abolition of the Royal administration of the towers. EnJoy EnJoy
24jul18--The land we see on the other side of the water is Isola Piana ( there are many islands named Piana ), an island located between Asinara in the north and Capo Falcone in the south-west in the extreme north-west of Sardinia . The island is uninhabited. The Tower of Punta Imbarcatogio, (Torre di Punta Imbarcatogio) is about 2000 feet from the camera and is a coastal tower located on the Punta Imbarcatogio in the south of the Isola Piana and belonging administratively to the municipality of Porto Torres. Built in the 1500's. Piana Island was used in the past as a pasture and was owned by the Berlinguer family of Sassari and was sold to the State on condition that it was preserved in its natural state, as it is today.
