Ithaca - Vathy
Ithaca is the second smallest island in size in the Ionian Islands after Paxos. It is located South of Lefkada and Northeast of Kefalonia. Ithaca is inhabited by about 3.084 inhabitants and belongs to the prefecture of Kefalonia and Ithaca. During the peak months of the summer season the population increases considerably. This small island with its barren soils relies mainly on fishing and tourism.
In ancient times Homer mentions it in the Odyssey as the homeland of Ulysses. Vathy is a picturesque town with a peculiar bay that closes in its arms the island Lazareto and its two Venetian castles.
The island was named after Ithakos, the first inhabitant of the island (son of Pterelaus and brother of Plyctoras and Niritos) or, according to mythology, he was the son of Poseidon and Amphimeli.
