Daratsos is located 4 km west of the city of Chania and is one of the most important suburban settlements of Chania. It is only 1.5 km away from the sea and more specifically from the beautiful beaches of Agii Apostoli. The area is distinguished for its natural beauty, but also for its tourism development. The original (Venetian) core of the settlement of Daratsos, whose creation and name date back to the first years of Venetian rule (14th century AD), is located on a hill at an altitude of about 70 m. From the highest point of the settlement there is an unrestricted view to the north, ie to Chania and to the Cretan Sea. To the south dominates the horizon the northern ridge of the imposing White Mountains, 40 km. long and 25 km. wide, which reaches an altitude of 2,453 m. and is known for both the number of its peaks and the unique one in the northern hemisphere "Mountainous Desert" over 2,000 m., as well as for the longest gorge in Europe, the Samaria Gorge (18 km long), which since 1962 is a National Park of Greece and in which lives the famous and protected "Kri-Kri" (Cretan Goat). For a fairly long period of each hydrological year (usually from late November to early April) the White Mountains are largely covered with snow, offering sunny winter days and a unique white spectacle on the southern horizon of Daratsos and the city of Chania. Also, very close to Daratsos and a little further west is Galatas, a larger settlement in size and population, which is the birthplace of the internationally renowned Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, and which was a place of resistance and martyrdom for the Cretans in the Battle of Crete (May - June 1941) during World War II.
