If you search for 'old maps' on Google (the online repository one), and type in 'blackpool' on the website, there a couple of maps from 1892 at 1:500 and 1:2500 showing the route of the railway, and they show the Tower as Aquarium, Aviary and Menagerie - before the tower was built! Blackpool stopped at Gynn Square. You can zoom in and out to compare with what's there now.
'Central Station' was very impressive, with 14 Platforms and sidings to match to accommodate all the Wakes Weeks train specials when whole towns just closed and off to Blackpool for Holidays. One of the busiest operations was in 1953 for the direct Blackpool-London Euston for the Wembley FA Cup Final. Closed down in 1964, the old track bed is used for the approach road, Yeadon Way from the end of the M55 to here. Used to loco spot with my dad from Bloomfield road bridge, next door to the footy club...Camera could just do with a slight nudge down to reduce the amount of sky and link up more with the pavement shots of the other camera of the King Edward and Tower...
Yes mate, going back to a similar age to yourself about 10 the coach park stretched about a half a mile with hundreds of coaches going right up to the railway station, date wise 1968. It was a magical time then as a child, we’ve been back many times and recently with our grandchildren, but it doesn’t have the feeling of old!
I think the road and bridge was very new around the time Paul. It would of been around 34 years ago, late 80's? I know the car park used to be the old train station. All the best mate.
@supra john, nice one fella! You’re obviously a lot younger than myself but I can also remember getting out of the coach after some 6 hours travel at least and off to our boarding house in Hornsby road, no bridge then. I can do the distance now in the car in just over 3 hours, take care mate!
Im so glad this camera is back online. It brings back happy memories as a small boy going to Blackpool with my parents and traveling over that bridge and seeing the car park come into full view was always very exciting. It was the sign that you was finally in Blackpool after what seemed like a really long journey to a 10 year old (it was only 40 miles). Crossing that bridge was always the end of journey marker and the start of the exciting bit. I can still remember opening the car door for the first time after parking the car and getting the fresh smell of the Blackpool sea air for the first time and hearing the seagulls.
10.08.20. Spectacular lightning show in the skies here tonight!
please have a look at Blackpool streets after heavy visitors all day still absolutely clean nothing at all on the floor ,,,,please praise Blackpool Council efforts in maintaining cleaness of streets by their very serious honest labour ,,,if realy we like Seagull behave peacefully we need to stop dropping food on the floor ,,,during ;Lockdown was no single Seagull walking in Blackpool streets ,,,they come in fact to help cleaning our dirts ,,,they attack people eating ,,,because used to have food droped on the floor ,,,we made them that way ,,,,lovely Blackpool street clean illuminated and with lovely lights of King Edward VII Pub illumination look sooooooooooooooooooooo beautiful ,,,,,,
I hope all of you seen Tony making taped isolation for both camera ,,,taking his long Ladder from Kent street cross Central Drive and do such isolation to protect the cables from raining so we have continious view of lovely Blackpool great thanks to Tony doing such efforts in high temperature because of his love to Balackpool and love global nations enjoyed too
Great thanks for john sure very soon we will have team from local persons look after level, and angels also to clean the lenses,,,,kindly if any one can help to get contact with Miss Karen Richardson the responsible of Blackpool Donkeyes business ,,,,almost every day around 6 pm large group of beautifully dressing donkyes give show through Chapel street ...then pass in front of my Gallery at 100 Central Drive then turning left in Palatine Road ,,,,what I want to say to her it is excellent idea if the donkey show followed by street camera from start to the end everyday so two beautiful attractions of Blackpool Blackpool Tower and Blackpool Donkeys are shown Live to let whole world feeling happy ,,,even if they cant visit Blackpool now ,,,,theyenjoy from home ,,,,,great thanks for everyone
If both cameras are tilted down so there is less sky in view, it should help stop the glare on the lens in the afternoon.
this camera needs a brightness tweak
