Bali is a seaside village in the Melidoni community of the Mylopotamos municipality. It is located on the northern road axis of Crete, 35 km east of Rethymno and 45 km west of Heraklion, and is built on the site of the ancient Minoan city of Astali.
Modern Bali is claimed by two cities of the Minoan period as their outlet to the sea, Axos and Eleftherna. Due to its location and geomorphology, Astali was a strategic point as it provided protection from winds and rough seas. It was a suitable place for the creation and development of one of the most important ports of the Minoan period. The prevailing view is that it was the port of Axos.
The legendary giant of Crete, Talos, stopped in Astali. That is why the mountains south of the village are called Talaia Ori. During the Venetian rule, the name was paraphrased to Atali, a name that the nearby Monastery of Bali or Atali (1635) still bears. The name Bali owes its origin to the Turkish word Bal, which means "honey," because it had many beehives. According to another view, the name comes from the Turkish word balik, which means "fish."
Today, Bali is a popular tourist resort with five central beaches and smaller, more secluded ones, with a wide variety of hotels, villas, taverns, bars, small shops, diving schools, water sports, rental cars and boats, supermarket, doctor's office, and pharmacy. There are organized excursions by car or bus. The location of Bali is right in the north center of Crete, and it is possible to see every point in every direction in one day! Also, buses from Heraklion and Rethymno stop in Bali. From the port, boats depart for short beautiful cruises and for Rethymno. A small train runs through the village every hour.
