Nisyros - Dodecanese
Nisyros is the island with a recorded history that exceeds 5,000 years.
The island of the reports of Homer and Strabo, Herodotus and Theophrastus. The island of Admiral Gnomagoras, the volcanic island created by the god Poseidon and the giant Polyvotis.
Panagia Spiliani in Nisyros is one of the most famous monasteries of the Aegean islands. It is located in a panoramic position on the hill above Mandraki, the capital of the island. The access to the monastery is from the main road, near the church of Potamitissa, from where the 130 steps that lead to the monastery start.
It is called "Spiliani" because the church of the monastery is located inside the cave on the hill. Inside the church is the icon of the Virgin Mary.
