The Rocks of Meteora are a masterpiece of nature. The visitor is impressed by the giant sacred rocks and their magnificence, which emerge from the plain just above the town of Kalampaka and the picturesque village of Kastraki. The peaks of some rocks exceed 400 meters altitude.

The uniquely beautiful geological phenomenon is an important monument of Orthodoxy and at the same time has been designated by UNESCO as a Cultural Heritage Site since 1988.

Hiking is the best way to enjoy the unique geophysical phenomenon of Meteora, but also to know the history of this place, following in the footsteps of the first monks who lived here for more than 15 centuries.

Of the twenty-four monasteries, only six are in operation today, while the rest are dilapidated and uninhabited.

The six monasteries to be visited are:

• The monastery of Agios Nikolaos of Asmenos or Monastery of Agios Nikolaos Anapafsa

• The Holy Monastery of Rousanou or Arsani

• The male monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior, also known as the 'Great Meteor'

• The Monastery of All Saints or the Holy Monastery of Barlaam

• The Holy Monastery of the Holy Trinity (Meteora)

• The female Holy Monastery of Agios Stefanos (Meteora)

Meteora is located in the prefecture of Trikala and access to them is very easy as from the capital of the prefecture you just follow the signs for the town of Kalampaka which is located just below the magnificent rocks of Meteora.
