I do miss Paleo. The weather looks fab and so many people using the beach, in fact, seems more than usual? Not long before our break there and counting down the days...
James - Look on the timeline view it happened last night, yes not quite the right date I expected either! Sorry!
Platform gone. That was a quick festival and a week earlier than I thought.
Looks like they're having to rebuild the platform :-(
There's something going on on the platform tonight with a crowd watching.
Thanks Rach, it sounds great with boat procession, music and fireworks on 10th Aug.Will watch out for it.
They're preparing for the Varkarola Festival which takes place every year around the nearest Saturday to 10th August, loads on the web - just google Varkarola Festival.
Platform being built , so could there be a music festival this weekend?
Love this beach
I've only visited Palaeo but it seems to have two or three beaches. I stayed in Arillas , a smaller resort up in the NW which is quite relaxing. The amount of sand on the beach can be very variable due to winds but has been good this year.
James, I meant to say, there was a jetty on the right side which was pretty long with a bench on that the boats used to moor to pick up passengers but it had gone in June and sat in the main car park as it looked like it was being cleaned and painted. The other side (further right) is the rest of the beach where there are sunbeds and some steps up to Vrachos, which is a restaurant that overlooks the bay. I love the place but in high season, its nothing more than a toilet stop before the tourists board their boats or wait for their coaches back to Corfu Town and the cruise ships. Its not great really despite the beach being beautiful, its crowded most of the time and unless you are eating there, you cant get a decent table.
Oh dear, seems like the incinerator that Corfu was having must have fallen through. Anyone know? I've been twice every year for goodness how long now and it seems the problem is excessive when the tourist season beings. Worst I've experienced was last year when it rained very heavily and the rubbish started floating down the roads. In June when we went it seemed as if the issues with garbage had been sorted but seems not from what people are saying. I have to say, it concerns me as the chances of getting ill surely must be high especially in this weather and as there's also human waste in the rubbish? I'll report back when we go in early Sept.
Need smellovision(some cinemas used it) and smell the Med sea air,the sun tan lotion and grilling fish and chicken slovaki(?).Yum yum.
Need sound added to webcam xx
Thanks for your posting Ton- I am off to Crete in a month (after the children return to school) -this was a holiday booked over a year ago so am looking forward to it. BUT am aware about the rubbish dumped on Crete as friends who have just returned have commented on it too. I love the Greek islands and the Greek people but I do think that this will be the last year that I do any hols around Greece due to the amounts of rubbish and the smell of it when it lies around in the heat. Unfortunately its not just small amounts of rubbish , it is mini mountains of the stuff- maybe the Greek people have no where to dump it/ burn it or whatever but its a real shame that the problem exists - even if it lies around for 4 weeks then tht is 3 weeks too long and in this summer's heat ...............
Despite huge amounts of money coming into Greece from tourism it just seems to have been wasted. Poor roads ,airports and general infrastructure.
